Challenge
A striking airport in a prime location the former military facility at Farnborough was in danger of becoming obsolete until TAG Aviation invested $100m to convert it to a modern civil airport, a key requirement of which was to comply with today's increased regulations and stringent safety measures.
Solution
NATS was invited to work on the project. All of the equipment was replaced, with only the MET equipment on the airfield itself remaining from the original infrastructure. NATS was responsible for factory acceptance testing of all the equipment and for drafting the 15 safety cases that the project required.
The training implemented by NATS meant staff declared themselves competent to transfer to the new tower and operate using the new procedures within two weeks.
Result
The project was completed six weeks early and with all approvals in place. The airport has now been able to significantly develop its civil traffic.
