NATS wins five-year MoD flight procedures contract

NATS Services Ltd (NSL) is to redesign the flight procedures at 54 military aerodromes as part of a five-year contract with the Ministry of Defence.

The contract includes converting flying procedures used by aircraft at military airfields from the current NATO standard (APATC1) to civil ICAO standard (PANS OPS). This will bring the MoD into line with NATO’s policy to move to the civil standard.

It will take three years to complete preparations at the airfields and convert almost 800 procedures. The following two years will include maintaining and monitoring the procedures.

The contract includes data management and design and production of draft charts for inclusion in the Military Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP). The new charts and procedures will become the standard operating practices for all aircraft flying in and out of military airfields.

Des McKeon, Commercial Director NSL, said: “NATS has a very effective working relationship with the Ministry of Defence.  They are an extremely important customer to us and we are delighted to have this further opportunity to build on that excellent relationship.”
