Edinburgh Tower

Challenge

As Edinburgh Airport continued to develop in the 1980's and 90's, owners BAA commissioned a new control tower building to meet the airport's future needs and act as an iconic symbol of Scotland's capital city.

Solution

NATS played a major role in this project from its inception. We provided the safety and user requirement specifications that fed into the new tower's design phase. Additionally we sat on the review board that oversaw its construction, which began in 2001, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing design that fulfilled operational requirements.

We provided the equipment that allowed for a seamless transition of the ATS service to the new facility and integrated it into the airport's existing infrastructure. Having equipped the new facility, we designed and delivered training to ensure a smooth transition to the new tower.

As part of this significant project, NATS was also involved in designing, installing and commissioning a new fibre-optic communications ring around the airfield, which interfaces to navigational and meteorological systems on the site.

Result

Edinburgh's ATS services were transferred on schedule to the new tower building in 2005.
