NATS is required under our licence from the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure the safety and efficiency of the UK airspace system. We conduct a rolling programme of airspace development where we believe change is necessary in order to maintain safety and reduce delay as air traffic continues to grow. We follow the airspace change process set out in the CAA Directorate of Airspace Policy (DAP) Airspace Charter.
This can require us to conduct consultation exercises with both airspace users and environmental stakeholders beneath proposed changes. The environmental consultation is normally only carried out with respect to airspace changes below 7,000ft but there are exceptions for airspace changes over Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and National Parks.
